The Red Hawks’ three-game winning streak was snapped following a double-overtime loss at Vassar College this past Saturday. The loss places the women’s lacrosse team at 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League, while the win propels the Brewers to 8-6 overall and 3-4 within the conference.
Sophomore Brewer Sarah Warner saw a golden opportunity with 14 seconds remaining in the double-overtime session to put Vassar ahead once and for all. Classmate Allie Morgan controlled the draw, but had her shot saved by RPI junior goaltender Ariana Hood. After blocking a shot by Warner, Rensselaer collected the ball but turned it over to senior Christine Eaccarino, who found Warner in perfect positioning to score the game-winner.
In the first overtime session, RPI was able to tie the game back up at 12 in a last-ditch effort to stay in the game. After Eaccarino put the Brewers ahead by a goal a mere two minutes into overtime, RPI freshman Emma Albert’s shot nailed the post with 2:17 left to play. Sophomore Afton Marshall was able to gain control of the rebound and find the back of the net with 33 ticks left on the clock.
Leading up to the two-overtime contest, senior Emily Donowick notched three goals on the day for the Red Hawks, in addition to junior Sam Fennessey’s three of her own, sophomore Stephanie Caouette’s two, and senior Kerri Clark’s lone tally. Marshall also finished the day with two goals.
Hood had 16 saves in the narrow loss, while Brewers sophomore goalkeep Nicole Engelhardt stopped 12.
The Red Hawks will close out the regular season on the road against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Friday, with the opening faceoff starting at 4 pm.
