The women’s lacrosse team finished the weekend strong with two wins against North Country rivals. Friday saw the Red Hawks claim a 14-10 victory over the Clarkson University Golden Knights, before tackling the St. Lawrence University Saints in an 11-5 treat for the seniors on Saturday’s Senior Day. Rensselaer finishes 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights fall to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the league, and the Saints drop to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
“This past weekend was amazing,” said senior Kerri Clark. “Our team played well as a whole. There was not a single person who did not contribute to our success this weekend, and it felt great to sweep two games.”
RPI was able to continue its winning streak against the Golden Knights, 17-0, following Friday night’s win. Nine different Red Hawks tallied on the night, including four goals from sophomore Stephanie Caouette.
Both teams played a back-and-forth game through the first 30 minutes of action, as the Red Hawks and the Golden Knights combined for a total of 15 goals. Clarkson junior Kimberly Loucks netted her first of six goals on the night at 28:25 of the opening half. Caouette tied the game at one before Clarkson took another single-goal lead. That slight edge did not last long, as the Red Hawks netted three straight for the 4-2 lead with 19:47 remaining in the frame.
Back-to-back goals by Loucks in the middle of the first half tied the game with 11 minutes remaining, but RPI fought back with three goals for a 9-6 lead at the intermission.
Rensselaer netted four unanswered goals in the first nine minutes of the second half, but Clarkson was able to add two to pull within five with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Golden Knights were able to notch an additional two goals in the final three minutes of play, but RPI held on for the win.
In addition to Caouette’s four goals, sophomore Afton Marshall netted three of her own, while senior Kerri Clark and junior Sam Fennessey added a goal and an assist each. Junior goaltender Ariana Hood finished with four saves for the Red Hawks, while freshman Hannah Walters stopped nine for the Golden Knights.
“We had great ball possession and made a lot of smart decisions,” said Hood. “The defense played amazingly well the entire weekend.”
Saturday set the stage for Senior Day at Renwyck Field—and the Red Hawks were sure to not disappoint their graduating class. Led by seven goals from the senior class and 14 saves from Hood, RPI took its third straight win.
Clark netted the opening goal of the game at 28:36 off a pass from freshman Kerrie Cahalin before St. Lawrence tied it up at one. It didn’t take long for the Red Hawks to respond, as Clark tallied her second of the game to take the lead—one that RPI would never relinquish. Rensselaer notched two[ more goals with 18:19 left in the half; however, the Saints responded with two of their own to cut the deficit to 4-3. Senior Emily Donowick made it a two-goal advantage for the Red Hawks entering the second half.
Hood finished the half with 11 saves—including several point-blank stops in the middle of the half.
RPI added three straight goals within the first eight minutes of the second to take the 8-3 edge. Although the Saints were able cut the lead to 8-4 with 10 minutes remaining, it was not enough, as the Red Hawks netted three more unanswered goals to take a seven-goal advantage. RPI would add three more goals before the game’s end, while St. Lawrence was only able to get one more past Hood.
For Rensselaer, Clark tallied four goals, while both Caouette and Donowick added two goals and an assist, and senior Carly Mahony netted a goal and an assist. Leading for the Saints was junior Julie Wooters, who had two goals, as well as sophomores Kim Cooper and Kelsey Redpath and freshman Liz Fagan, who each contributed a goal. St. Lawrence sophomore goaltender Anna Marchand had eight saves in the loss.
“I’m glad we had the win for our senior game,” said Hood. “The seniors really stepped up for themselves, and put a lot of points on the board. [Senior] Jenna [Lettenberger] played some great defense and made my job a whole lot easier.”
RPI enters the final stretch of its season this weekend with two of its final three regular season games. Saturday the Red Hawks travel to Vassar College to face the Brewers at 2 pm, before returning home to Renwyck Field to take on the Western New England College Golden Bears on Tuesday at 7 pm for the Red Hawks’ final home game of the season. “Vassar and WNEC are always tough contenders for us, so we can’t just expect that they will roll over and let us win,” explained Clark. “I know we can handle both teams, especially if we play like we did this past weekend.”
Donowick agreed: “We are carrying the momentum from this past weekend all the way to the end of the season. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to give them everything we’ve got!”
