Interfraternity Council
Spring Rush comes to end

Patrick McAndrews
Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

This year’s Spring Rush has been a great experience for the Interfraternity Council. We hope that all the students and fraternity chapters enjoyed these last few weeks meeting potential members of their respective fraternities. We want to thank you for your cooperation with rush policies; we have a great start for this year.

The Greek Women’s Hockey Night was a great success. As you have probably heard, we collected over 1,000 canned goods. The coach and team were very appreciative of greek life’s attendance at the game.

The Greek Leadership Summit on Saturday, February 7 was another great success. The IFC wishes to thank the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Alumni Inter-Greek Council for its work and support. A special thanks also to Ray Lutzky ’02—Outreach Director at Rensselaer and an alumnus of Lambda Chi Alpha—for his hard work to make this year’s Leadership Summit possible. Thank you also to President Shirley Ann Jackson for her keynote address. During the summit, members from almost every house took the opportunity to find resources and ideas to make themselves and their houses better.

The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and Alumni Inter-Greek Council met throughout the day. The greek councils met with David Haviland ’64—Rensselaer Alumni Association vice president and brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon—to discuss ideas and goals, and how to accomplish them together. Our councils then met with Vice President for Student Life Eddie Ade Knowles and Dean of Students Mark Smith. We had a great opportunity to discuss many issues brought up about RPI and greek involvement. Knowles assured us that the Institute is pleased with greek life as a whole, but reminded us that there are still high expectations to meet.

This year’s Greek Leadership Summit, with the help and advice of administration and alumni, has promised to reignite greek pride. It was a great conclusion to Spring Rush, and we hope that each chapter and its members will make the next year—including Greek Week, Fall Rush, and everything in between as much of a success as possible.

As we move into the bulk of the semester and our workloads and activities take more and more of our time, remember that we need to continue to work together. We are all the Interfraternity Council. Its cabinet and council members are here to serve the fraternity community. With that said, you need to take every opportunity to help them. This includes giving suggestions, joining committees, or even just attending meetings. The stronger we are together, the stronger our individual fraternities will be.

We hope that as bids are handed out, bid dinners are enjoyed, and new pledges or potential new members are welcomed, fraternities and their members remember to stay involved in the IFC and on campus.
