If I hand out one piece of advice to people in my time here, it’s this: Please do not get sick. It’s not that getting sick is all that terrible; if you’re sick enough to miss class that’s unfortunate, but the common cold is okay. Rather, I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t depend on the Student Health Center to help you. As much as they advertise that they care, they really don’t.
Maybe my cases are isolated, maybe not. The first was almost a year ago exactly, when I was just two weeks post-operative from having part of my knee reconstructed. I woke up one morning, and, well, couldn’t get out of bed no matter how hard I tried. So, silly me, I called the Health Center to see if they could help me out regarding classes. Their response? “If you are so hurt, then why don’t you just hobble over to the hospital?” Hobble? Hobble? I understand they usually don’t hand out excuses for kids that are sick, but seriously? I’d just torn my ACL, MCL, and meniscus and broken my femur and tibia, all in my right leg. And all they could do to help me was to tell me to hobble over to the hospital. I mean, at least say call a cab or something. I’m barely coordinated enough to make it across campus on a set of crutches, let alone down 15th Street.
The more recent incident was a couple of weeks ago: After a ski trip, I got a mild case of frostbite on my hands and feet. It was pretty painful—I’m not going to lie—so I decided to check in with the doctor to see what they could do about my ice cold, blue and purple toes. The doctor barely walked into the room before she told me that I was lying and had completely made up my story before walking out again. I never even got the chance to take off my shoes.
Frankly, I wouldn’t trust my health to a group of people who simply show up to do their job and have no concern for their patients. If they decide that your case is worth listening to, then you’re lucky. If you are like me, and are actually injured, then you may be in a bit of trouble. Hope that you have no problems hobbling to the hospital. I heard it’s just a few blocks down the street.
