IFC, Panhel announce candidate endorsements

Raymond Lutzky
Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

Skyla Loomis
Panhellenic Council President

The Grand Marshal and President of the Union are leadership positions that affect everyone on campus. The greek community shows their support of these leadership roles by endorsing candidates for each position. Last week, both the Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council invited the GM and PU candidates to present their views and goals. Each council independently chose to endorse candidates for the two positions.

The Panhellenic Association originally decided to endorse Grand Marshal candidate Lisa Bucellato and President of the Union candidate Ariana Twitchell. Panhel had difficulty deciding who to endorse for Grand Marshal because the candidates were of such an excellent caliber. While Panhel believes Lisa would have done an excellent job, in light of the primary election results, Panhel now endorses Gil Valadez. Issues of concern that Panhel focused on include campus safety, the Public Safety escort program, and synergy among all groups on campus. Both of these candidates offered exciting specific plans and goals related to these issues. Panhel believes these engaging candidates will also be able to infuse the Rensselaer community with fresh ideas, vigor, and liveliness; qualities which are strongly needed.

During a meeting last Wednesday, the Interfraternity Council selected Grand Marshal candidate Gil Valadez, and President of the Union candidate Ariana Twitchell, for endorsement. The IFC believes that these two candidates will be able to accomplish more in student government, because of their attitudes and goals. Rather than "suppose" about what they could do in the future, they impressed the council with discussion of previous accomplishments and their thoughts on current issues concerning greek and non-greek students.

Did you now that this year’s GM Week is also Greek Week? The IFC and Panhel have planned an exciting weekend of activities for greeks. The festivities begin with a torch run on Thursday, and include such activities as the first "Greek God & Goddess Contest," pie-throwing, a Friday movie night, sports competitions, a block party Saturday evening, and an awards brunch Sunday morning.

We encourage every chapter to participate! This is a great way to show the campus our spirit, pride, and unity—at a time when the entire campus is active with students and school spirit, greeks too should be out in force. Enjoy the week, be proud to be greek!
