What’s that you say? You are trying to plan out your spring entertainment schedule while staying on campus? You thought last year’s concert in the Houston Field House was awesome and can’t wait to hear about what’s going to happen this year? You thought Snakes on a Plane was as awesome as I did? Not only that, you really want to know when the next big name show at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center is going to happen so that you can be there? Well, have I got news for you!
I am very excited to announce, as promised this year, we will again be hosting a big-name band here at RPI, in our very own Field House. Mark your calendars to save Sunday, April 26, because this year RPI will be host to the Believers Never Die Part Deux Tour, featuring Fall Out Boy. I’m sure that the tour’s headline band, Fall Out Boy, needs no introduction, with hit singles such as “Dance, Dance” and “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down.” In addition to their radio play, the band has had songs featured in both Rock Band and Rock Band 2, and also headlined many nationwide tours, including the 2005 Nintendo Fusion Tour and the 2007 Honda Civic Tour. Their fame has also earned them MTV Video Music Awards as well as MTV Woodie Awards, and their list of accolades goes on. In addition to Fall Out Boy, the tour features Cobra Starship. Some of you may remember Cobra Starship from their hit single “Snakes on a Plane (Bring It),” which was featured in the 2006 hit action-adventure movie Snakes on a Plane, featuring Samuel L. Jackson. In fact, this is not the first time that Cobra Starship has toured with the headline band, Fall Out Boy, as they were also together in the 2007 Honda Civic Tour. Rounding out the rest of the concert are All Time Low, Metro Station, and Hey Monday, for a total of five acts for the evening.
At this point, I’m sure you’re wondering how you can get tickets to this event, and that is what I am about to tell you. This Friday, January 30, tickets will be going on sale. Tickets for this event would cost $28 if you were to buy them online or elsewhere; however, the Rensselaer Union is offering a limited number of tickets for just $17 (activity fee-paying RPI students only, student ID required)! To get this extra special price, all you need to do is either go to the Field House box office starting Friday, or the Union Administration Office starting next week. In addition, more information about the tour and the bands can be found at http://www.falloutboyrock.com/.
If Fall Out Boy isn’t your thing, or you want to see a performance sooner, I have good news for you also. This Monday, tickets went on sale for Béla Fleck, The Africa Project—Collaborations with Amazing African Musicians, which will take place March 28 at 8 pm in EMPAC. Béla Fleck is an American banjo virtuoso who went to Africa to discover the roots of the banjo. This trip to Africa was cataloged in the documentary Throw Down Your Heart, the film that inspired this tour, The Africa Project. Tickets for this event are $10 for students and $20 for faculty and staff. However, on February 2, they will go on sale to the public, so secure your ticket right away. This event is co-sponsored by Student Life and the Office of the Provost.
I hope that everyone is as excited as I am for both of these events. In addition to these performing arts events, keep your eye out for more announcements for things to do this winter and this spring. I promise that I will have at least one more event to talk about this winter. As always, pu@rpi.edu is my e-mail. Let me know if you have any questions about either of these events.
