Red Hawks take home wins
Posted 01-25-2009 at 6:04PM
Jon Coats Staff Reporter The RPI women’s basketball team, coming off of two big wins during winter break, traveled to Geneva, N.Y., on January 16 for their Liberty League opener. Facing off against the William Smith College Herons, senior guard Whitney Coleman racked up 24 points, the game-high. Along with Coleman’s 24 points on the day, RPI freshman Sara Wetmore, senior Kerry Hayes, and senior Caitlyn Charest had 14, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Wetmore also brought down an RPI-high eight rebounds. After a strong performance in the first half to put the score at 34-31 Red Hawks, the girls returned in the second half with solid defense, allowing William Smith to score only 25 points. With the strong second-half effort, the final score was 71-56, giving the girls their first win over William Smith since January 19, 2005 and moving them to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Liberty League. Freshman Laura Easterling summed up the game: “We came out on fire and were hot enough to last the game. They [Herons] are a good team and we didn’t underestimate them.” William Smith fell to 7-6 on the season.
The next day, after the team’s big win over the William Smith Herons, the Red Hawks traveled to Clinton, N.Y., to tip off against the Hamilton College Continentals. Unlike the game the day before, the Red Hawks got off to a slow start. With only 10:47 left in the first half, RPI trailed the Continentals 13-3. But, with nearly perfect shooting from the foul line (10-11), RPI had chipped away at Hamilton’s lead, by the break bringing the score to 26-24. However, after a shaky start to the first half, Rensselaer’s performance in the second was anything but sluggish. Sophomore Allison Connor hit a three-pointer 13:19 into the second half, giving the Red Hawks their first lead of the game (34-32). After Connor’s three-pointer, RPI never looked back and for the rest of the game either held the lead or sprung out of a tie. The Continentals brought the game to a tie twice during the second half. However, at each tie, RPI answered back to take the lead again, the first time with a jump shot by Wetmore, and the second time with a three-pointer by Charest with 8:40 left in the regulation. Charest eclipsed double digits with 11 points on the game, while Wetmore had an RPI-high 13 points and seven rebounds. With two players reaching double digits, when time expired, RPI won their fifth straight game 53-46 over Hamilton and improved to 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Liberty League. Hamilton went in a different direction, falling to 7-5 on the season and dropping to 1-2 in Liberty League Play.
Senior forward Elizabeth Barker scored a game-high 24 points in Tuesday night’s 72-53 trouncing of Vassar College. The win now places RPI 11-2 overall on the season, and a perfect 3-0 in the Liberty League.
The girls are back in action Friday, January 23 at the Armory against St. Lawerence University. RPI is looking to stay undefeated at home and move to 12-2 on the season. Tip-off is at 6 pm in the Armory and students are reminded that admission is free with an RPI ID.
