Editors Corner
Poly staff welcomes input

Cara Riverso
Editor in Chief

Ahh, it’s that time of the year again. The days turn short, students scramble to complete their final homework assignments and exams, and everything becomes a rush to the finish line—namely, winter break. Amidst this rush, many clubs hold their elections for the spring semester, and we here at The Poly are no exception. With the seniors stepping down to make way for some bright new faces on the Editorial Board, I am very optimistic about The Poly’s future issues.

Now typically, this is the time when the new Editor in Chief gives you an introduction to his or her plans for the semester and pleads for your help and input; I can promise I won’t be the one to stop this tradition.

I can definitely say there’s always room for improvement; however, our staff can only do so much without your assistance. Many times, there is just a lack of communication around the campus, which ends in The Poly not covering something and other people complaining that we didn’t cover it. So I’d like to avoid this situation; there is a plethora of things going on that our editors just aren’t aware of.

Do you know something going on that would make a juicy front page story? Be sure to pass that lead on to our news desk (news@poly.rpi.edu). Are you a part of a group that doesn’t have its cultural or musical events covered? Shoot an e-mail over to our features department (features@poly.rpi.edu). Want to see fencing, ping-pong, or some different sport covered? Our sports editor is always open to the new (sports@poly.rpi.edu). Don’t like something we did in our last issue? Send me some criticism (poly@rpi.edu)! We like to hear all comments about our issues—the good and the bad.

And not only would we love your help with leads; The Poly is always looking for new writers, photographers, and staff members. We welcome new faces across the board.

If you are interested in writing, send an e-mail to the section you’re interested in! Or maybe you don’t want to write all the time, but think that something on campus is particularly unfair. Then whine about it in a letter to the editor for our editorial and opinion section.

Even if you don’t like writing, there are plenty of other ways to get involved. If you don’t really like writing, but enjoy pointing out other people’s mistakes, you’d make a great addition to our copy staff, and for those of you photography addicts out there, we’re always looking for additional photographers to cover events. Didn’t like that infograph on the front page? Help our composing staff make a better one next time.

And finally, for you business-oriented people, The Poly is a small, student-run business at heart. You can get some real-life experience working with advertising and doing all those other day-to-day duties of our business department, such as invoicing.

So look over at our staff box in the bottom left corner of this page, find an e-mail address of interest, and send us your opinions, ask to join a section, or just complain that I wasted five minutes of your time with this Editor’s Corner. And, of course, you can always stop by our office (Union Room 3418) on a Tuesday night to find out more about a section or help us out and have some pizza and wings!

On behalf of the Editorial Board, I wish you well on your finals and hope you have a safe and happy winter break.
