Nominee brings sanity to Union
Posted 04-04-2001 at 11:21AM
Jonathan Nouri Senior Reporter If you ever have a question about RPI that you can’t get answered, chances are this nominee for Person of the Year will know the answer. Her name is Ellen Young, and she is the senior secretary in the offices of the Union. Some of her responsibilities, among many other things, include answering the phones for seven people in the office, answering questions for all 130 clubs, keeping track of all officer and member lists, and distributing the brochures and flyers in the Union. She also works with the off-campus housing database.
Young has a very diverse background, which includes a degree in graphic design, work towards a Master’s degree in community psychology, working as a behaviorist collecting data on the behavior of people, and being a childcare worker. She says that she gets bored very easily and that is why this job is perfect for her because there is always something to do.
What Young enjoys most about Rensselaer is her interaction with the students here. In her position, she sees students coming in and out of her office all day, all wanting something different. She enjoys the level of professionalism that is present in the Union, but at the same time appreciates how it is a relaxed environment. She enjoys the sense of community that the Union provides and says "everyone is always welcome, both in the building and in the office."
If she could change something for the better at Rensselaer, she says it would be the way things are communicated. She feels that people here, especially students, are sometimes left in the dark because things are communicated either not at all or not in a timely matter. | |
