How many times have you had a great idea about how to improve the way you learn? Where would you go to share your idea or even apply it? Ready for the answer? The Academic Affairs Committee of the Student Senate is the place you need to be. We are the medium you would use to get your ideas and concerns heard and the place to find answers on how to approach these issues.
You (or your parents) pay your tuition. You should have a voice in your education. This is one of the goals of the AAC. We are the part of the Senate that deals with making our education system better for our students.
This is a great way to gain insight on how the other side of your academics work. You will get to meet and make connections with administrative officials. Recently, we have been working with the Dean of Students Office, professors, and other departments to discuss an honor code and ways to promote academic integrity within RPI.
Along with the honor code, we have also been discussing how to improve TA training and how to make sure that professors report to the Electronic Warning System. EWS is a way for students to find out if they are doing poorly in a class. Although professors may find reporting tedious or even a waste of time, it really helps the Advising and Learning Assistance Center and the student’s advisor find a way to help the student do better.
If you want to get everything that you possibly can out of your academic experience here, this is a great way to make your voice heard.
Come to the Academic Affairs Committee meetings, every Thursday at 8 pm in the Student Government Suite in the Rensselaer Union. We would love to have more involvement, and we’re sure that you’d like to be more involved. If you’d like more information, or if you have any other comments, questions, or concerns, please contact me, Bianca Zongrone, at zongrb@rpi.edu.
Editor’s Note: Grand Marshal Kara Chesal ’09 has asked her committee chairs to write a series of “Top Hats” in her stead.
