With the end of recruitment and over 50 girls beginning their new member period, houses begin to focus their efforts toward individual and collective philanthropic efforts. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the Panhellenic Council and Health Center have come together to fundraise for breast cancer research. Cupcakes will be sold throughout campus, with one-third of them filled with candy, representing a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer.
Nationally, Alpha Phi has supported cardiac care and research and continues to do so its their chapter at RPI. They will be hosting an on-campus blood drive on October 22. Alpha Phi encourage a healthy lifestyle while further fundraising with their three-on-three basketball tournament.
As Halloween approaches, Alpha Gamma Delta is putting together a haunted house for kids in the Troy community. With Zeta Psi’s support, the event will include a maze, candy apples, and a donut-eating contest. Alpha Gamma Delta has also shown support for Habitat for Humanity, as sisters dedicate their weekends to building houses.
Champions are Readers is a literacy-based philanthropy supported by every chapter of Pi Beta Phi. This semester, sisters are visiting public schools in Troy and reading childhood favorites such as Dr. Seuss to second- and third-graders. Up ’til Dawn, an event fundraising for the fight against childhood cancer, is another immediate focus of Pi Beta Phi.
Alpha Omega Epsilon has recently hosted a Business Fashion Show with the Rensselaer Society of Engineers, offering students options and insight to prospective outfits in the working world.
Sigma Delta is currently preparing for Nuestra Belleza, a beauty and cultural contest with Hispanic food, performances, and a glimpse of life in other cultures. The event is October 10 at 5:30 pm in the McNeil Room and tickets sales are going towards orphans in Central and South America.
