Rathskellar offerings sub-optimal

I’ve never been a food critic. I just like to eat on a regular basis. Who doesn’t? So last year, when the Rathskellar’s SubConnection eliminated cucumbers and green peppers from their offering of trimmings, I wasn’t crying over the loss of the crispiness and flavor that these green growths provide. I was a little pissed off—I mean, if you’re not one for the spicy (hot peppers and the like) or bad breath (onions!), you don’t have a whole lot of options besides the standard lettuce and tomato. And really, considering the sandwich and bread options offered, that leaves you in a hard place.

After being urged by the friendly cashier (who was also unhappy about the lack of cucumbers and green peppers) to submit a comment card about my missing greens, there was an amazing response of ... nothing. No “Sorry we stopped offering these things ... they’re never coming back.” And no “This is why ...” Needless to say, this was followed by another non-response after a second comment card. Combined with the other less-than-awesome qualities of sandwich bread and specialty sandwiches, I finally gave up on going to the sub shop altogether.

Well, that was more than a year ago, and I feel somewhat mixed about saying that this is the first time I’ve been back for a sub since. Yes ... the green peppers and cucumbers are back! (I think it’s quite exciting). But what about the rest of the package? I don’t believe our campus sub shop can really hold a candle to any place like Quizno’s or Subway, or even the McNeil Room! Which raises the question: Why can’t the quality, flavor and diverse offerings of the McNeil Room trickle down to the Rath?
