RPI Rugby Team
Special to The Poly

On March 3 the RPI men’s rugby club traveled to the Rockaway Invitational College Rugby Tournament. Thirty-one players made the trip even though there was only one side for RPI entered; many first-semester players made the trip, and some even saw some action. When all the matches were completed RPI emerged as champions.

In the first match, RPI overwhelmed Division I Stony Brook. The match was completely dominated by RPI; only RPI’s own rustiness could help Stony Brook as RPI wasted many scoring chances on knock-ons in the open field. The final score was RPI 27, Stony Brook 0. First-half tries by Inside Center Ross Barber, Wing Dan Griswold, and Eight Man Bill Ryan helped the Red Hawks to a 17-0 lead. A second-half try by Barber and a conversion and penalty by Greg Dileo finished the scoring. RPI rival Siena College made it to the finals by defeating Fairfield University, 17-0.

In the finals, RPI extended its winning streak against Siena to nine straight matches. The Siena team resembled a select side as they fielded six past high school All-Americans and an exchange player from England. In addition to the daunting competition, RPI was hit with 12 penalties in the first half, and was continually stalled. Still, the RPI side remained focused and determined. After a turnover by the Siena wing, Griswold made the Saints pay with a try, and Dileo hit the tough conversion from about 40 meters to give RPI a 7-0 lead. Siena came right back; Three minutes after the RPI score, the Siena fly half, Tom Burns converted a drop-kick off a penalty play. The half ended 7-3, RPI.

The second half was all RPI as Rockaway resident Bob McGee took a ruck ball in for a try after an impressive march down the field. That try increased the lead to 12-3. Then, with about five minutes remaining, Outside Center Mike Arthur finished a nice back movement with a try under the posts. Dileo closed out the scoring with a conversion and the match was out of reach for Siena. The final score was 19-3.

RPI’s commitment to defense was evident, as they did not give up a try in the tournament.

Bill Ryan was named the Tournament MVP.
