The women’s lacrosse team opened their season in Panama City, Fla., by defeating Oneonta 15-5 and Bridgewater 21-8.

In the opening game the Red Hawks scored the first 2 goals as Midfielder Julia Geer and Attacker Erin Crocker got scores within three minutes of each other. Oneonta’s Catherine Jacobs netted a goal with 18:39 left in the half to cut the lead to 1 but Midfielder Kim Yates netted a goal just 17 seconds later on a pass from Crocker, making it a 3-1 game.

Oneonta would respond with a goal just seconds later as Pam Intorcia scored on an assist by Sarah Andrews. Andrews would score with 12:07 left in the half to tie the game at 3. Then less than a minute later, Midfielder Mary Roy scored her first collegiate goal to put the Red Hawks up 4-3. Several minutes later, Yates scored unassisted to up the lead to 5-3, before Andrews responded to make it 5-4 at the half.

In the second half, the Red Hawks dominated from the get-go as they scored at will. Attacker Emilie Wangerman scored just 17 seconds into the half on a pass from Dena Mielke to get things going. Three minutes later, Crocker converted another Mielke pass into a score to up the lead to 7-4. Rensselaer would pick up three more goals, including Defender Bridget MacKean’s first intercollegiate score, before Oneonta’s Marina Angelides would make the score 10-5.

That’s as close as the Red Dragons would get. Geer and Mielke each added 2 more goals and Cater Ortolano netted 1 as the Red Hawks won by a score of 15-5.

Two days later, the Red Hawks were at it again. This time they flexed their offensive muscle in a game with Bridgewater.

The Bears found a similar fate as the Red Dragons, as the game was somewhat close in the first half before Rensselaer broke it open after the intermission.

The Red Hawks opened the scoring as Geer netted a score just 11 seconds into the contest on a pass from Mielke. Five minutes later, Wangerman added another. Just 30 seconds later, Roy put in the Red Hawks third score on another assist by Mielke. The Red Hawks hit a bit of a lull before Ortolano found the back of the net with 11:54 showing on the clock.

Following this, Geer and Mielke took turns scoring goals, with Geer getting the final score of the half on a feed from Mielke. This made the score 9-6, RPI.

The Red Hawks showed their prowess as a second-half team as they outscored the Bears 12-2. Included in the 12 second-half scores were goals by Midfielder Mary Beth Cooley and Attacker Jenn Celli—each of these being the first of their intercollegiate careers.

When the final horn sounded, the Red Hawks had not only won their second game of the season, but won in dominant fashion by a final score of 21-8.

On the day, Geer finished with 5 goals to lead the way, while Mielke had 2 goals and five assists. Goaltender Ann Larsen totaled 11 saves in upping her personal record to 2-0.

If the Red Hawks can continue their offensive pace, they could make some noise in the UCAA and contend for a postseason bid. With Geer and Mielke leading the way and a plethora of young talent contributing, this team could be tough to beat down the stretch.

The Red Hawks will open their home schedule this weekend when they take on Skidmore on Friday at 4 pm and Union on Saturday at 2 pm at Harkness Field.
