Interfraternity Council
Students must keep open minds

Brian Keating
Interfraternity Council President

I want to pass on the two most valuable pieces of advice that I have ever received about college to the freshman class and anyone else who may need it. I feel that with a bi-weekly column as the new Interfraternity Council president, it is the least that I can do in my first article. If you go out and meet lots of people, and don’t make assumptions, you will make every dollar you spend to go to RPI worth it.

That advice seemed simple and straight-forward enough to me when I first heard it in the weeks leading up to Navigating Rensselaer and Beyond two years ago, but it is much harder to do than it is to say. In fact, making an assumption almost led to me missing out on the best experiences of my college life. I assumed that I knew what greek life was about and that I wanted nothing to do with it. To my surprise, after a friend convinced me to go to a rush event, I found out I was wrong and had made an incorrect assumption.

Fraternity fall rush started this week with three block parties and a greek organization fair called Meet the Greeks. It is a great way to get a brief look at all 30 fraternities on campus, get some free food, and meet a ton of new people (both freshmen and upperclassmen). The fraternities at RPI vary massively in size, activities, and lots of other elements, so don’t stop at meeting just one, because you may find one that fits you perfectly.

Joining a fraternity or sorority has many things to offer, some that I will explain in later columns and others that you just have to experience. Don’t make an assumption on whether or not fraternity or sorority life is for you. Go to rush events. No matter what you decide, at least you will know it was an informed decision, and you will have met more people.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the block parties on Sunset Terrace today at 5 pm and Pawling Avenue on Friday at 5 pm as well. Both events will have shuttle busses leaving from the Union to take you to the block party. Feel free to e-mail me any questions you may have at IFCatRPI@gmail.com.

Remember, keep in mind throughout your entire time at RPI, “meet lots of people and do not make assumptions.”
