Chesal welcomes freshmen

Kara Chesal
Grand Marshal

On behalf of the Student Senate, I would like to welcome or welcome back all members of the RPI community. I hope that the summer proved to be restful and even profitable for many of you. I spent much of my summer on campus and was able to see firsthand the various projects that have been going on. As you walk around campus during this first week, you might be excited not only by the friendly faces you have not seen all summer, but also by the overwhelming changes and additions that have been made to campus itself. The greatest changes can be seen in Russell Sage Dining Hall, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, the East Campus Athletic Village, and Sharp Hall. If you have not yet stopped by to look at these projects, even from the outside, please make sure you do; they are all progressing or finished and are a testament to the hard work done here over the summer months.

During the Navigating Rensselaer and Beyond program this past week I had the opportunity to meet with many of the first year students, and their enthusiasm and talent meet and even exceed those of current classes. I am excited to see what they will do next and how they will further improve and impact campus. During my convocation speech I noted that the tides have begun to change at RPI and instead of looking to your left and right to see who won’t be here at graduation, I encouraged them to look to their left and to look to their right and appreciate that for the first time, they had a 30 percent chance of sitting next to a female student.

Before school started, I also had the opportunity to hold a Senate training seminar with the returning Senate members. The event was very successful and only further proves the potential we have to accomplish numerous goals this year.

I hope that your first week of classes proves to be enjoyable and successful. As always, if you have any questions regarding the Student Senate, please feel free to contact me at gm@rpi.edu.
