I had never heard Jeff Beck before, but I was not impressed at all by his new album You Had It Coming. Many of the songs had random, incoherent beats produced by machines and electric guitars that used heavy distortion. I did not enjoy listening to this album at all and found it painful to listen to the songs.
If I had to say any songs on the album were bearable, they would be "Nadia" and "Blackbird." These songs were softer and I found them to be somewhat more pleasant to the ear.
Beck began making music on his own after leaving the Yardbirds. He is supposed to be one of the most talented guitarists of all time, and is held in high regard along with Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, but I had trouble noticing this on his latest album.
I found Beck’s album to be a collaboration of guitar compositions in styles ranging from techno to blues to traditional Irish. If you ask me I think he should lay off the techno.
All in all, I do not recommend this album to blues or Irish music fans. If you are a fan of Beck and enjoyed Who Else, the album that precedes You Had It Coming, then you may like this album, according to reviews I read, as Beck’s transition to techno began with Who Else.
