Greetings, Class of 2012, and welcome to the place that we all fondly call the ’Tute. This campus has a lot to offer, including a multitude of student clubs and organizations, and we hope you take the time to explore all of these opportunities. Each week, we at The Poly—one of those many student organizations—work to develop an issue of this newspaper, which will keep you informed of both what has been happening on campus and what to look for in the near future.
This is the wonderful, cozy place called the Editorial/Opinion (or Ed/Op) section. It is the part of the newspaper where you can find rants, praise, student government updates, community feedback, and the like. Each week, this page will be filled with Editorial Notebooks, the Staff Editorial (which you are reading right now), a cartoon, and the staff box. An Editorial Notebook features the view of a member of our editorial staff, and can cover just about anything that tickles his or her fancy. (When the Editor-in-Chief writes a Notebook, it’s called an Editor’s Corner.) The Staff Editorial is similar to a Notebook, except that it is developed and approved by our entire Editorial Board. The cartoon is, well, a cartoon, and the staff box contains titles and contact information for everyone involved with the newspaper, as well as general information about The Poly.
The rest of this section is home to articles written by the Grand Marshal (the “Top Hat”), the President of the Union (the “Derby”), and other student government officials. Letters to the Editor—which we do encourage you to submit if you would like to share your opinions—can also be found here. Finally, something called “Poly Snapshots” will occasionally make an appearance. In this part of the Ed/Op section, students and other members of the Rensselaer community can give feedback on past and upcoming events, current issues, and other news.
Of course, this certainly is not the only section in the paper, as you are probably aware. Current events from campus, Troy, and further afield can be found in the News section. The Features section contains information on and reviews of events, movies, music, and more, as well as an upcoming schedule of local concerts and performances. Finally, sports news, statistics, schedules, and the like all fit neatly within the confines of the Sports section.
Hopefully you have enjoyed this issue of our newspaper, and we look forward to keeping you informed throughout your time at RPI. Enjoy the remainder of the summer, and we will see you in August.
