Did you catch the heat wave last weekend? No, not the weather, but rather the Fifth Annual RPI DanceSport Championships.

The event began with an evening of social dancing at the Hawaiian Luau Dance on Friday night. Many competitors and social dancers were treated to a relaxing evening of dancing and even the limbo.

Saturday brought with it some of the best dancing around. Over 80 couples from approximately 15 colleges on the East Coast, along with many non-student couples from the Capital Region, came to compete in RPI’s ’87 Gym. Although the competition was tough, the RPI team walked away with ribbons in all events and completed the evening by winning the team match for both International- and American-style dancing.

Even though the day was long and tiring for all, the crowd was dazzled by Youth National 10 Dance Champions Alex Rechits & Elena Ventrenko, who demonstrated that ballroom dance wasn’t just for the adults in grand ballrooms across the world.

RPI demonstrated how enjoyable dancing truly is by offering fun dances during the competition. These dances included intercollegiate waltz, hustle, polka, rookie-vet cha-cha, and the infamous anything-goes paso doble.

As the sport continues to grow, the RPI ballroom dance team continues to make a name for itself at competitions along the East Coast.

But the team members are not the only ones having fun. There are also many opportunities for other RPI students to learn how to ballroom dance. From swing to waltz, tango to cha-cha, students can learn right here on campus.

The RPI Ballroom Club is having a dance on April 6 as part of GM Week for those interested in learning some moves.
