On Saturday April 12, accepted students from across the nation made the journey to Rensselaer to attend the Institute’s annual Accepted Student Celebration. The day began in the Armory with a welcome from President Shirley Ann Jackson, Dean of Admissions and Vice President for Enrollment James Nondorf, and Laura Wontrop ’08.

Jackson invited the accepted students and their families to explore the campus, to get as much as they could out of the day. She set the stage for the event by expressing the many achievements of Rensselaer’s historical graduates and current undergraduates, noting the recent developments of solar water purification, biodegradable insulation, and more. Jackson then described Rensselaer’s ongoing projects, everything from athletics and building expansion to research and academics. Jackson closed by saying “We have extended invitations to you to become part of the Rensselaer community, its future … you can find your inspiration here. The future is created here. What will you do? What will you create? What will you discover? How can we help you? We do amazing things for you.”

With that Wontrop explained to the accepted students that they are similar, both seniors about to depart their normal life for a new one. Wontrop used her own experiences at Rensselaer, such as her work on The Polytechnic, the ambassador program, and Formula SAE to depict the uniqueness of the Rensselaer community.

After the welcome, students were dismissed to their respective prospective schools to meet department heads and to learn more about what Rensselaer has to offer them. Each school offered tours of its facilities, a chance meet with professors, see current research projects, and talk with current Rensselaer students. Accepted student Christopher Atwood said, “It’s a cool school. [It] looks like you have a lot of good facilities and professors here.”

Throughout the day students were free to explore and get a feel for being on campus. The Institute offered fora for both parents and students, answering the many questions that are posed during this transition time. In addition, Rensselaer Student Life offered tours of the freshman residence halls and of Commons Dining Hall. Campus tours were also being offered for those who had not yet been to campus.

Students had a chance to explore and met with students they may have talked to in online fora. “I’ve been loving the day. It’s been neat to finally meet people I’ve met online, putting names with faces,” explained accepted student Tim McMullan. For many students this is the day is a major step forward in the college career and no doubt is overwhelming.

The Institute works to reduce this stress by holding a Student Activity Fair to show students another side to the Rensselaer community. The fair was held in the McNeil Room of the Rensselaer Union and offered a chance for students sign up for clubs and activities to further develop their future at Rensselaer.

The day was beautiful and warm giving a welcoming feel to the already friendly campus. The atmosphere was positive from students, as accepted student Catherine Mickey stated, “I’m really enjoying it. I can actually see where I’m going to be.”
