The men’s lacrosse team avenged its loss last week to Union College when it beat Skidmore College April 2 and Ursinus College on Saturday. The Red Hawks are now 8-3 on the season since losing to No. 3 Middlebury College late Yesterday afternoon.

Rensselaer hosted Skidmore on Harkness Field for a Liberty-League match-up in which the homestanding Red Hawks rallied to win 8-6, dropping the Thoroughbred to 6-2 on the season, 1-1 in league play.

Despite scoring first, the visitors found themselves at a 3-1 disadvantage after two goals by senior Alex MacDiarmid. Junior Midfield Josh Secora, who had the other goal, would finish with a four point day.

Although Skidmore quickly tied the game at three-apiece, MacDiarmid netted a pair of goals for RPI to give them the 5-3 lead. With two second left in the half, the Thoroughbreds snuck one in to leave the scoreboard at 5-4 for the half.

Skidmore’s sophomore Tom Howley tied things up at 5-5 with the only goal in the third. The score was unchanged until 12:25 of the fourth quarter when Secora scored on a man-advantage to put the Red Hawks up 6-5.

Both sophomore Paul Cerone and Secora scored while Skidmore managed one more at 4:15. Their last minute efforts were futile.

MacDiarmid led the team with a game-high four goals while Secora had three goals and an assist, Cerone had a goal and an assist, and freshman Nick Billy had two assits. Junior Ryan DeJordy stopped 14 shots in his sixth win of the year.

On Saturday, RPI was led to a 9-5 victory by sophomore Devin Arnold who scored four goals.

Although the visitors scored first five minutes into play, the Red Hawks made a statement and scored seven consecutive goals to put them ahead 7-1 by the half. Arnold scored early and was followed by Secora, MacDiarmid, and Billy. Ursinus never built momentum to overcome the deficit.

Yesterday the Red Hawks dropped their game against No. 3 Middlebury, 11-8. Secora led the night with 4 goals. This is only the third loss for the Red Hawks this season making the current record 8-3.

Men’s lacrosse travels to Canton, N.Y., this Sunday to face rival St. Lawrence University.
