The women’s lacrosse team matched up against No. 14 William Smith College on Friday afternoon and despite playing a strong game came out short, losing 15-10 in snowy Troy. The second loss of the year dropped the Red Hawks to 5-2—0-1 in the Liberty League—while William Smith remained undefeated, 5-0.
The visiting Herons put together a handy 3-1 lead by the 14:29 mark with RPI’s first goal coming from junior Emily Donowick, but RPI rallied to tie the game at 4-4 when senior Morgan Wahl scored with 8:59 remaining in the first.
Despite tying the game up at five apiece, RPI saw the Herons go on a three-point streak, taking an 8-5 lead at the half. The Red Hawks rallied to the occasion once again, and tied the game at 3:26. Freshman Stephanie Caouette, classmate Afton Marshall, and senior Morgan Wahl scored within 2:07 of each other.
William Smith, however, proved why they are nationally ranked as they went on the offense and scored seven times over a 17-minute span that ended with just 3:17 to play. Despite sophomore Sam Fennessey’s two goals late in the game, the Herons had secured the victory and retained their undefeated status.
Sophomore Emily Perkins made four stops in goal during the second half for RPI, while antagonist from William Smith, junior Becky Josefiak, made six saves.
The Red Hawks travel to Skidmore College and Union College for a pair of games this Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games start at 4 pm.
