“You suck!” chant is traditional

To the Editor:

This is in response to Bob Hydorn’s suggestion last week that the student section stop yelling “You suck!” at hockey games.  I have always enjoyed RPI hockey games throughout my four years at school here, not necessarily because of the sport itself (I cannot claim to be much of a hockey fan), but because of the great camaraderie between RPI students all watching our Division-I team together.  A big part of this is the traditions we, as students, all know well and all have in common.  The “You suck!” chants, among others, usually aren’t just us jeering at the other team, but instead are a few of the many traditions that make coming to these games so fun.  I agree that more positive support for our team in the form of more creative cheering could be helpful, but as long as I attend hockey games I’ll continue to chant “Clarkson still sucks!” to keep these RPI traditions alive and memorable long after I graduate.
