FRESHMAN PAUL GALE SENDS a flurry of shots toward an opponent during the last tournament of the season. This past weekend the RPI paintball team team endured a long drive down to Crim’s Paintball in Bear, Del., to compete in its first official NCPA Event, the Drexel Open. Twelve teams from Northeast colleges participated in the event, including: Stevens Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, Penn State University, Northeastern University, University of Maryland, Drexel University, Liberty University, and Temple University. The RPI team was comprised of six students: sophomore Josh Stimson, juniors David Alfano, Demetri Karanikos, and Scott Jaran, and Gale. Sophomore Dan Sullivan coached from the sidelines.

RPI finished 8th out of the 12 teams, with a 3-5 record. The day started off rough. RPI won its first game, but then lost the next three in a row. RPI lacked the experience to play together as a team and relied too much on individual skill, which led to some heartbreaking defeats. As the day progressed, however, the team changed its strategy and rolled the opposition with little difficulty. Defeat would not tarnish the squad’s pride and determination. At the end of the day, Liberty University finished first and the Drexel teams took second and third.

The potential of the team increases with each victory. This tournament showed the squad its weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge, and with more practice under its belt, RPI will be feared by others in the Northeast Intercollegiate Conference. After its finish in this tournament, RPI moved up to 49th in the nation.
