The RPI paintball team competed Sunday, November 11, in its second tournament, the WNEC Open, at Camelot Paintball in Chicopee, Mass. Now wait, I know what you’re thinking: RPI has a paintball team? Yes, and it’s quickly becoming one of the larger clubs on campus. The sport is both physically and mentally demanding. Players must have the courage to move to the next bunker while dodging paintballs moving at 300 feet per second. They must move fast while remaining conscious of their opponents’ positions on the field. One false move or any hesitation could mean serious trouble for your team. Three teams from RPI courageously battled against teams from other schools, including Springfield College, Western New England College, and University of Massachusetts Amherst.

When people think of paintball, they think of a bunch of people dressed up in camouflage clothing, hiding behind trees trying to surprise the opposition. Tournament paintball is a bit different. Speedball, the most common form of tournament paintball, consists of a field slightly smaller than a football field with air-filled bunkers strategically placed throughout the course. Five-man teams try to eliminate each other while attempting to retrieve a flag hung in the middle of the course. Five-minute matches are point-based. Pulling the flag first and hanging it on the opponent’s dead box is worth 75 of the 100 total points that can be earned, but without eradicating the other team beforehand, the chances of that are slim to none.

RPI missed out on the semifinals by only a few points. The club, consisting of both veterans and rookies to the sport, continues to improve with each passing day. Practices are held on Saturdays at First Prize Paintball, located in Latham. Next up is the National Collegiate Paintball Association event in Delaware on November 17. RPI hopes to defeat other colleges from around the Northeast division. Look to find out more about the of the paintball team in the near future.
