Some of the best stage performers in the business hit Albany Tuesday night as the Barenaked Ladies rocked the Pepsi Arena. Their performance here was the last on a tour to promote their most recent album, Maroon.
There can be no doubt that the Ladies have a whole lot of fun in front of a crowd. Whether skipping along to "Humour of the Situation," getting shaved on stage (more on this later), or simply playing to (and sometimes with) the crowd, it’s apparent that the Ladies are having a good time and want the audience to be part of it.
The show started promptly at 8 with opening act Chantal Kreviazuk. Besides needing a new stage name, she seemed to be a bit stiff on stage. Most of her songs, although decent, were certainly nothing special. Kreviazuk sounded a bit like Alanis Morissette, except that her lyrics were less poignant and her vocals less plaintive.
The high point of her 35-minute set came in the middle, with the songs "Believer" and "Surrounded." In these tunes, the muddy guitar work was more than compensated for by a more prominent electric piano part and clearer vocals. The crowd’s favorite part of her act, though, was when Ed Robertson and Kevin Hearn of BNL joined in for one song near the end of the set.
After the opening act, the audience was ready for the Ladies to pick up the pace, and they were certainly not disappointed. BNL exploded onto the stage and immediately launched into "Too Little Too Late" and "Alcohol"—which really got the crowd going—before introducing the band. They kept the energy level up by continuing with "Falling for the First Time" and the huge radio hit "Pinch Me," during which the whole audience started waving. At the appropriate point in the song, the Ladies were showered with various pieces of underwear, which they hung off their instruments as they finished the tune.
The evening had several musical highlights, most of which were, unsurprisingly, from their older albums. "The Old Apartment" off of Rock Spectacle drew a huge crowd reaction, as did "One Week." The lighters came out for "When I Fall," an amazing but downbeat song which aptly demonstrates that the Ladies’ musical strengths are not solely in energetic and zany lyrics. "Brian Wilson," during the first of two encores, drew a truly immense amount of applause, and the biggest crowd pleaser of the night was, of course, "If I Had $1,000,000."
Aside from the outstanding music, there was naturally a large dose of comedy during the evening. At one point, the "Imperial March" from Star Wars started playing, arousing the audience’s curiosity. Then vocalist Steven Page started singing Britney Spears’ "Oops, I Did It Again" in tune to it, drawing laughs from the crowd.
The biggest joke, however, started during the introduction, as Robertson joked that the people on stage with Kreviazuk must have been copies of him and Hearn because he "would never get on stage with an opening act." He also said that it couldn’t have been him since he would never grow a moustache, at which point Page pointed out that he had a moustache; Robertson looked appropriately shocked at this.
Moustaches and shaving turned out to be a major theme of the evening, as Robertson later explained that near the start of the tour someone dared the band to grow moustaches. Since, he said, the band takes dares very seriously, they decided that not only would they grow moustaches, but that they would ask their entire road crew to do the same. All but two of crew played along, and the band had the audience flip off the offending members of the video staff, who promptly threw an "off-the-air" image on the screen.
The band then had another member of the crew come on stage to shave them, saying that they hoped to get into Guinness World Records by being the first rock band to grow moustaches simultaneously and then have them shaved off simultaneously on stage. They also had a volunteer from the audience come join them in being shaved. When asked how long he’d had a moustache, he said "10 to 12 years," drawing a huge reaction from the crowd.
BNL puts on an absolutely wonderful show, and while the current tour has come to a close, Page indicated that the band would be touring the U.S. again this summer. Go see them in concert if you can—you won’t be disappointed.
