Saturday’s victory was not just the seventh of the season, but one of the most memorable in the recent history of RPI football. The double-overtime finish of the Transit Trophy game in Worchester, Mass., ended with a four-yard touchdown run by freshman Nick Costa to engrave RPI’s 21-14 win on the Trophy.

The comeback triumph over the WPI Engineers was brought about when the game was pushed into OT by an RPI touchdown with just a minute left. The visiting Engineers were behind 14-7 with just 1:30 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Jimmy Robertson and his crew stormed all the way down the field 73 yards in a drive from RPI’s own 27 to the endzone, where junior Eren Savasli finished with a six-yard touchdown.

Freshman Peter Nilson kicked the extra point and put the game into overtime, as RPI’s defense held its ground and eventually forced an interception with just six seconds left on the clock. The interception was just one of six turnovers forced by RPI’s outstanding defense. Although the defense gave up plenty of yards during the game, it was able to hold its own with a little luck when it counted and helped secure RPI’s win.

The first overtime started with another interception, although RPI couldn’t capitalize as they missed the 22-yard field goal that would have won the game, but it wouldn’t matter as the second OT was more favorable to RPI. Costa’s four-yard score would be enough for the day as the defense, led by junior Nick Casale, stopped the attempt to send it into a third overtime session. Costa ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Sophomore Tim Acker also made 15 tackles throughout the game, and came up big, making the team’s first three interceptions. With four tackles—three for a loss and one sack—junior Khaly Merot also made big contributions to the team’s win.

Throughout the first three quarters, RPI struggled against a strong WPI defense that did something no team has been able to do yet this season—stop the fourth down conversion. Luckily for the visiting Engineers, they found success when it mattered in the fourth quarter and overtime play.

Robertson went 21-for-41 with 231 yards passing. He also ran for an additional 55 yards on the ground.

The regular season is close to an end, but another tough contest awaits the Engineers as they host the University of Rochester next Saturday at 1 pm on the ’86 Field.
