Student Senate Update

Posted 10-24-2007 at 6:42PM

At last week’s meeting, the Student Senate’s main focus was a presentation on institute finance by Co-Chair of the Finance, Facilities, and Advancement Committee Daniel Horvath ’08.

Horvath reported that there was a 22 percent investment return, a growth in total by 18 percent and net assets by 12 percent, and the good retention on the Class of 2009, and very large Class of 2010 gives more tuition revenue to the Institute. A higher-than-expected endowment also lends to reducing tuition costs, and because RPI has decided to borrow money from major banks instead of using endowment funds, the interest on the endowment will still outweigh the interest due on the bank loans. Horvath also reported that $1.26 billion of the $1.4 billion goal in the capital campaign has been raised, and the goal is expected to be met by June 30, 2009.

The Senate also discussed the GoCrossCampus debut. As of last Tuesday, 235 students had already signed up. Teams are divided by residence halls, and students who live off-campus can play as well.
