The women’s hockey team won its opener 3-2 in exhibition play against the Dawson College Blues. The hockey season at the Houston Field House kicked off on Saturday night, and while the women don’t play a game at home again until October 12 and 13 against the University of North Dakota, they will return this Saturday for the annual Skate with the Engineers program.

The visitors got on the board first after a quiet opening period, when their forward Audrey Lapointe received the puck behind the net and beat junior goaltender Ashley Mayr stick-side at 2:37. Barely a minute later, sophomore Jodi Yoworski took a pass from senior forward Brooke Thompson and put it in at 4:04.

RPI would score all three goals in the second period; the next was by the freshman combo of Kendra Dunlop and Sydney O’Keefe, as O’Keefe finished off a rebounding shot by Dunlop at 6:42. Sophomore Alison Wright scored from a pass by classmate Whitney Naslund to put the Engineers up 3-1.

Although the Blues fought back with a goal halfway through the third on sophomore goalie Emily Ford, they never scored again, with Ford stopping seven shots in the final frame.

The Engineers travel to nationally-ranked Boston College Friday night for a 7 pm game against the Eagles.
