After going 1-1 in the Stevens Engineering Cup last week, the RPI women’s soccer team headed to Massachusetts to take on Springfield College this Saturday. The single game for the Red Hawks this week marked the end to a three-game road trip.

In the first half, neither team could find an opportunity to score. Rensselaer managed just one shot, as the women continuously found themselves battling for field position. The Pride took six shots in the first half, but even with more attempts on goal, were unable to tally a point. Freshman Meghan White played very well in the net, making five saves in the opening frame as both teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.

When play resumed in the second half, Springfield’s defense remained airtight as it continued to keep constant pressure on the Red Hawks. RPI played well also, as both teams continued to exchange blows. It wasn’t until the 76:03 mark that the momentum shifted in favor of Springfield. Junior Kayla Thibeault scored an unassisted goal for the Pride, blasting it past White for the score, which proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 contest.

For the day, Springfield outshot the Red Hawks 14-1, held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, and committed nine fouls compared to RPI’s seven. White made eight saves in goal for Rensselaer, while junior Sue Jenny made zero for the Pride.

Despite playing well throughout the contest, it was a tough loss for Head Coach Eric Miller and company to take. The defense was obviously there, and allowing just one goal on many days would be enough for a win. However, the offense struggled, due to an opposing defense that was very tough to deal with. One shot attempt on the day, though, will not translate into much success.

This coming weekend marks the opening of Liberty League play in which the Red Hawks will return home to Harkness Field for a short homestand. The RPI women will square off against St. Lawrence University at 4 pm on Saturday, and Clarkson University on Sunday at 2 pm.
