Student Senate Updates
Posted 10-07-2007 at 10:47PM
Nathan Santos Staff Reporter The Student Senate met with Dr. Lester Gerhardt, vice provost and dean of graduate education, at its meeting on September 11 to hear plans to bolster the Institute’s study abroad program, and to eventually make it mandatory for engineering students, preferably in their junior year. Gerhardt explained that they hope to achieve a 25 percent participation in Spring 2009, and slowly bring that percentage up to 100 percent. Responding to senators’ questions, Gerhardt did follow up that there would be the ability to opt-out in some circumstances—such as those in ROTC and sports—cost would be minimal, and there would be financial aid opportunities.
In committee reports, the Campus Communications Committee, chaired by Brian Zaik ’09, plans to organize office hours, for student senators to respond to inquiries and hear input from their constituency. A directory with more information is planned for the board outside of the Student Government Suite. The Academic Affairs Committee, co-chaired by Patricia Leusner ’10 and graduate student Christina Laskowski, is planning on expanding interest among constituents by appealing to students to express their ideas and thoughts; Facebook groups linking to the Senate Web site will be created.
The Senate also brought up a few upcoming events. The semester’s first Pizza with the President, organized by the Committee on Student Life, will be held this upcoming Thursday, September 20 from 5–7 pm in the dining room on the second floor of Sage Dining Hall. The Campus Light Walk also took place on September 17, starting at the Union Horseshoe at 7:30 pm. As a result of the walk, the campus will be upgrading some of the bulbs to conserve more energy and provide better lighting at night. | |
