The RPI men’s soccer team came out firing on all cylinders in its first game of the season on Saturday, against SUNY Purchase at home in the Red Hawk Classic. Things went well for RPI, who used a strong offensive attack and steady defense to pace the team in the season’s early going.

Rensselaer got on the board first, just under 20 minutes into the game. Sophomore Mike Long one-timed a pass from senior Aaron Gundle right by the Purchase goalie, senior Noah Colantuono, and into the back of the net. Shortly after, Gundle increased the RPI lead to two. Senior Gary Sroka missed a shot, but Gundle headed the ball in off the rebound.

Purchase mounted a charge at the 25:25 mark, cutting the lead to 2-1 when sophomore Daniel Grabowski-Clark did his best Gundle impression, heading the ball in for a goal of his own.

The Red Hawks were not done there, though. This time, Sroka took a pass from Long and blasted it into the net for his first goal of the game, making the RPI lead 3-1. Freshman Julian Conner would add one more score for Rensselaer at the 43:48 mark, to give the Red Hawks a strong 4-1 advantage heading into halftime.

When play resumed in the second half, sophomore Jable Prom picked up right where he left off last season. Scoring twice in the 60th minute, he helped cushion Rensselaer’s lead to four. The first score took place when Prom received a pass from Long, beat a defender and netted the shot home. The second came after Prom made his way up the right side of the field, beat another man, and put the ball into the left side of the net for the goal.

The two scores gave RPI a 6-1 lead, which would be the final tally. Sroka and Long each scored one goal and added two assists. Prom scored twice, and Gundle had one goal and one assist. Senior Jeffrey Krywanczyk played the first half in goal for RPI, while freshman Alex Penny played the second—neither stopped a shot. Colantuono made seven saves in the loss for Purchase. RPI outshot their opponent an amazing 25-1 on the day, and committed just one foul compared to Purchase’s 16.

Game two of the weekend for RPI was against Colby-Sawyer College in game three of the Red Hawk Classic. A scoreless first half, characterized as a defensive struggle and grudge match, made way for a second half full of action.

The Chargers took the first lead, 1-0, roughly six minutes into the second half after freshman Corey McKean scored off of a loose ball. Rensselaer answered back at the 60:39 mark to tie the game at one. Freshman Blake Adams made a good pass to classmate Jeff Hebert, who came down along the sideline, and scored on the right side of the field.

Gundle then gave the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead, their first advantage of the game, after scoring on a penalty kick created by a foul committed on Prom. The Chargers, though, were able to tie the game up once more, this time with junior Chris Rafferty doing the honors when he beat an RPI defender to a rebound and was able to put home the shot for the goal.

In overtime, sophomore Lincoln Field nearly played hero for the Red Hawks. With 25 seconds left in the frame, Field put his best efforts into a shot on goal, but freshman Chris Feltes made a diving stop to save the game for Colby-Sawyer.

Feltes made nine stops on the day for the Chargers. Penny made three saves for RPI, while Krywanczyk made one. Rensselaer outshot Colby-Sawyer 22-13, and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks, while committing five fewer fouls—12 compared to 17. Hebert and Gundle were the goal scorers for RPI, while Adams tallied one assist.

The Red Hawks will head into week two of the season with a record of 1-0-1. RPI’s next task will be Ramapo College on Friday and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday; both games are in Schenectady, N.Y., for the Union Classic. Look for the Red Hawks to improve on their early season success, and continue to keep the heat and intensity on their upcoming opponents.
