Erik Swanson
President of the Union

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a great summer full of entertainment, relaxation, and a little work. This year will be full of opportunity and challenge. For the freshmen, we offer over 160 clubs and organizations, which you are encouraged to join. From learning how to fly a plane or sail a boat, to learning about the diverse cultures on campus, we have a club for everyone. For those students who don’t find a club they are interested in, we also have a very easy system for starting a club of your own. These first few weeks of school shouldn’t be too hard academically—we can hope—so take the time to meet others and participate in events. Whether you are a freshman or a senior, it is never too late to join, and each year you can start afresh. This Thursday, August 30, from 6–9 pm, we will be holding our annual Activities Fair in the Houston Field House. Almost all of our clubs will be represented, and it is a great opportunity to sign up for the club that interests you most. If you would like student leadership to be in your path, stop by the Executive Board table and learn what you can contribute to the Union, and how you can work with a talented group of students to manage an $8.7 million budget!

Sitting at the freshman convocation over the weekend, I was delighted to see so many enthusiastic students. We hear it over and over again, and many of us have become jaded, but what you achieve at RPI is only limited by your ambition. Everyone at Rensselaer contributes his own personality to our community, and without that diversity, we wouldn’t have such an interesting place to attend school. I’d like to end with an anonymous quote: “Always remember you’re unique … just like everyone else.”

I wish you all a very productive, fulfilling, and most importantly, fun-filled year.
