Red October last of great sub films

The Hunt for Red October—This is the last of the great submarine movies, a fine offering in the tradition of Das Boot and Run Silent, Run Deep. Crimson Tide and U-571 got nothing on Red October—nothing, I tell you!

Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery star as Jack Ryan and Marko Ramius in this John McTiernan rendition of Tom Clancy’s nuclear suspense novel. It was McTiernan’s follow-up to his 1987/88 smash-hit films, Predator and Die Hard, and the beginning of the Jack Ryan series of film. (A fourth in the series, Sum of All Fears, is supposed to be released this summer with Ben Affleck taking over the Ryan role from Harrison Ford, who took it from Baldwin after Red October.)

Hunt is suspense-filled and engaging, even a second or third time around. I highly recommend it. If you do see it, keep an eye on Connery’s hairpiece, as rumor had it costing about $20,000!
