The latest CD by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Outbound, impressed me. I have to admit that after listening to a few of the songs I thought this album was terrible, but after I heard the whole album I realized how cool it was.

I would not normally listen to music of this type but I realized the talent of the band immediately. This music kind of bored me but at the same time was very relaxing. If you are a music enthusiast who enjoys jazz and bluegrass, I would recommend this album to you.

Outbound is the type of CD you can pop in your stereo and fall asleep to. The music is very soothing.

The album features Shawn Colvin, John Anderson, John Medeski, Adrian Belew, and Paul McCandles. I would have to say that my favorite songs from the album are track six, "Earth Jam," and track eleven, "Lover’s Leap"; both have the type of poetic vibe that is apparent throughout the album.

Many of the songs on Outbound have a mysterious feel and let the imagination run wild. There aren’t many lyrics but a lot of fantastic instrumentation. Not only were the typical guitars and drums used on the album but also the bassoon, soprano and tenor sax, penny whistle, tabla, B-3 organ, acoustic bass, steel pans, and a violin—not to mention the amazing vocals.

The talent of the band is evident in every song. They are fantastic musicians with terrific talent. Fleck is noted as the premiere banjo player in the world. Bassist Victor Wooten is one of the most celebrated of all time because he breaks out of the boundaries of categorization to develop unique beats and stylings. Future Man Royel, possibly the most unique of the band members, invented the drumitar which is shaped like a guitar and enables him to reproduce sounds of an entire drum kit with a few fingers. Royel’s second invention, "The Royel"—which is shaped like a piano—has allowed him to play with the emotion that he had always felt for music deep in his heart. With the exception of Royel, the band members have all made solo albums that are supposed to be great albums.

I recommend Outbound to anyone who has an appreciation for good music or who is in the mood for some soothing music.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are currently on tour for Outbound and are playing at the Palace Theater on Saturday at 8 pm. Go check them out!
