In a week characterized by inclement weather and unreasonable field conditions, the RPI baseball team went 1-2, dropping a game to SUNY New Paltz and splitting a doubleheader with Liberty League opponent Rochester. At the beginning of last week, the Red Hawks were ranked 16th in the nation. The team’s record now stands at 13-6 with a 3-3 Liberty League record.
On April 11 the Red Hawks traveled to New Paltz, N.Y., to take on their baseball team in an out-of-league game. The game went scoreless into the bottom of the sixth inning when the home team scored four runs. RPI tried the pitcher-by-committee method, having four pitchers pitch the first five innings, and eight in all. New Paltz, on the other hand, went the more traditional route, and had the starter pitch all nine innings. In the top of the eighth inning the Red Hawks cut the lead in half, scoring two runs, but that was all the away team could muster, with the final score being 5-2 on behalf of the home team.
Three days later the baseball team traveled to Rochester to take on the Liberty League opponent Yellow Jackets. The two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday and were scheduled to play again on Sunday; however, Sunday’s games were cancelled. Once again, as they have all season, the Red Hawks split the doubleheader, winning the first and losing the second.
The first game was won by another great pitching performance from junior Joe Zongol. The southpaw pitched all seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out two, and improved his record to 3-0 on the season. Offensively the Red Hawks were led by a seventh inning lead-off home run from senior Adam Lasek. Senior captain Jason Pollard added an RBI double later in the seventh. The game ended with a 3-0 score.
The second game was close, 3-2 in favor of the home team, after five-and-a-half before the home team hung a nine frame on the board, amassing seven hits to go along with the nine runs. Two additional runs were scored later leaving the final score at 14-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
The Red Hawks were unable to bounce back after the loss on Sunday as, again, the second doubleheader was postponed due to bad weather. The team’s Tuesday home game against Montclair St. was postponed as well. If Robison Field is dry enough today, the team will get back to action against MCLA at 4pm. The Red Hawks’ Liberty League schedule continues this weekend with an away game and a home game against Union, Saturday and Sunday respectively
