Council continues to tackle laundry issue

Jacob D. Hunt
Independent Council President

Over the past week, the Independent Council has continued to churn out solutions to the current campus laundry issue. In response to our letter directed toward opening communications with Residence Life, Peter Snyder, director of Residence Life, has referred us to Kathy Edick of Auxiliary Management Services, who recently became the campus liaison for the laundry contract.

Based on the responses given in the letter to the IC, our current situation is as follows: the administration views the new $1 price as fair and competitive based on a survey of other laundry services in the area, while also citing machine damage from last year as vandals tried to modify machines to get free laundry service. Housekeeping has been asked to increase focus on maintaining the laundry areas; however an administration walkthrough during the week revealed relatively clean facilities—the location and number of facilities visited was not mentioned. Space restrictions and requests for more equipment are being reviewed, especially at the RAHPs. The administration has also found that repairs to existing machines have been executed in accordance with RPI’s service contract with our laundry service vendors.

I am now in the process of setting up a meeting time with those involved with the laundry service on campus. I urge every campus-dwelling student to send the Independent Council his or her views on the campus laundry service. Keep in mind that we cannot act upon this issue if no one sees it as important enough to pursue; your letters determine this. E-mail IC-L@lists.rpi.edu.

In lighter news, the IC has finished tabulating our course surveys and is now processing the results. Keep your eye on The Poly because the results will be coming out shortly! Be sure to look for genuine blue IC surveys, which will be distributed approximately three weeks before the end of class this semester. The IC has just rebudgeted to ensure an adequate supply of these surveys for the end of the year. Also, my many thanks to Rodney (midnight shift) from Public Safety. After locking my keys in my office, he was able to help me when the building supervisor could not.
