Let’s have a fair election

Posted 04-05-2007 at 2:55PM

The student government election season has officially opened here at Rensselaer, and we as students will soon be granted the opportunity to elect not only class officials, but also the delegates to serve as Grand Marshal and President of the Union—the highest offices a student can hold. This year’s GM Week is March 23-30, when undergraduates and graduates alike will decide who should run the student body next year.

While this can almost go without saying, we first and foremost encourage everyone to go out and vote. The outcome will affect all students equally, so it is important for everybody to voice their opinions through whomever they vote for. The Grand Marshal and President of the Union especially have great influences on aspects of student life, ranging from club budgeting to activities to Student Senate discussions. Also, the individuals running for class councils and senate positions can assist students in getting their concerns heard and dealt with. Some issues to look out for during these elections include continued shuttle tracking, proximity card access, and expanding Rensselaer Advantage Dollar venues.

Though it is ultimately most important for students to actually get out and vote, an election season cannot run smoothly without fairness and support for the Rules and Elections Committee—from both those running and those voting. There is a handbook posted on the web at http://elections.union.rpi.edu/ that all candidates are expected to abide by, which outlines proper versus improper campaigning techniques. Each contender is responsible for his or her own actions and any materials supporting the campaign, and upholding these guidelines will guarantee equal opportunities for all. The voting constituency should also make sure that these rules are being met while also remaining fair themselves. Voters should not try to help a candidate cheat or further their cause by sabotaging another runner.

Throughout this process, we urge you to consider all the facts and make sure the elections will be untainted. To get further information on the rules and party platforms, visit the RNE website. Look for the GM Week issue to be published on Friday, March 23, which will include candidate profiles and The Poly endorsements. To make the best decision, we hope that you will not hesitate to contact candidates directly to ask questions about issues important to you. Just make sure you will feel comfortable in the end that you voted for the right person.
