The baseball team had an interesting week as they split three doubleheaders, two with St. Lawrence on Friday and Saturday and one with Castleton on Tuesday. The two doubleheaders open up the Red Hawks’ Liberty League schedule. Once again, a couple Red Hawks players named to the Liberty League Team of the Week on Monday. The team’s record at the end of the week was 12-4 (2-2).
Shane Griffin, a junior, was named Liberty League Performer of the Week on Monday as he had a great weekend with a batting average of .667 with eight hits and three runs batted in. He also had 12 assists from his second base position. He had two three-hit games against St. Lawrence, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
John Dreimiller, a freshman, was named Liberty League Pitcher of the Week. In his one outing he had pitched a complete game (seven innings) allowing only four hits while striking out four and throwing only one walk. His one-earned-run outing gave him the win against St. Lawrence on Friday.
On Friday, the Red Hawk baseball team came out of the gate strong earning a 2-1 win in walk-off fashion with a bases-loaded walk. Senior Ken Carroll was the batter that drew the one-out walk which scored junior Matt Muscatiello. Muscatiello lead off the top of the seventh with a double.
The second game of the doubleheader went as well as the team battled back from a 4-0 deficit to later gain a 9-5 lead going into the top of the ninth inning. The Red Hawks scored all of their runs in the last four innings. But the stranglehold ended there when the away team put up eleven runs in the top of the ninth inning to eventually win 16-9.
On Saturday the two teams met on Robison Field and once again they left with each winning a game apiece. Again, the Rensselaer baseball team won the first game behind a great pitching performance, as mentioned above, from Dreimiller, 3-1. The Red Hawks scored all three runs in the second inning. Muscatiello drove in two of the runs with a single. They would not need anymore as St. Lawrence could only answer with one run, scored on sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The fourth game between the two teams was similar to the second as the Red Hawks led 5-4 in the sixth but allowed three runs in the bottom half of the inning and eventually could muster only one more run, losing the nine inning affair 7-6. A trend seemed to shine through the weekend as RPI won both seven inning early games and lost the nine inning nightcaps.
On Tuesday the Rensselaer baseball team took the opening game with a 12-4 seven inning win against the non-conference Castleton team. The team mashed the ball amassing 16 hits along with their 12 runs. The Castleton defense gave RPI a few breaks too, allowing six unearned runs out of the 12 total, especially in the third inning when an error led to four unearned runs.
In the third inning, the home team took the lead and never looked back, leading 6-3 after three and adding six more in the last four innings. One standout was senior first basemen Ken Carroll who had two hits, including a double, and led the team with four runs batted in. Senior reliever and captain Ian Titcomb garnered the win with three innings pitched and only one earned run.
Once again the home team dropped the second game of the doubleheader continuing the trend of the week. The Red Hawks dropped the game 6-2, falling to a 12-4 record on the season. RPI started off the game well, scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but Castleton’s combined six runs in the fifth and sixth innings led to an eventual Red Hawk loss. Carroll continued his successful day, going three-for-three with another double and another RBI. Sophomore reliever Andrew Novick suffered the loss.
The baseball team continues its Liberty League schedule with a doubleheader against Clarkson on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
