At the end of a harrowing day on March 29, we learned about the tragic death of one of our former students: Anson J. Tripp. His death was ruled a suicide after a full-day investigation by the Troy Police Department and results from the medical examiner.
I know this has been a difficult time for our community, and especially for the family and friends of Anson Tripp. We all grieve for them and extend our deepest sympathies.
Yet in the midst of a painful situation, I witnessed an institution come together with poise and compassion. Faculty in the CII protected their students when news spread of a death in the building; students comforted each other in hallways and dorm rooms; staff worked tirelessly to ensure our safety and inform the community of the rapidly changing details of the day.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who were involved in the response — especially the men and women of the Division of Administration. The collaboration between Public Safety and the Troy Police Department was flawless.
When circumstances were still unclear, we cancelled classes and closed the campus. I chose to take a conservative approach for a number of reasons, but safety was foremost in my mind. I thank the entire Rensselaer community for it’s patience during that process.
Anson’s family and friends have painted a clear picture of the special place that Rensselaer held in his life. Last Thursday ,this community showed why it is worthy of such esteem.
