Last Saturday the Rensselaer men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams started the season off on a good note. They competed at the Towson Invitational, a non-scoring meet, where each enjoyed victories.

Senior Kemar Brown of the men’s team was rather successful during the indoor track & field season and has continued that achievement, being triumphantly completing the 100-meter dash in 11.75 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.39 seconds. Brown’s accomplishments have led to his selection as the Liberty League Track Performer of the week. Sophomore Justin Metzger also gained a victory over the weekend when he pole vaulted 4.57 meters for first place. Metzger has also been bestowed with an honor: Liberty League Field Performer of the Week.

Junior Daji Akindele-Alo attained second place in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.29 seconds. With a time of 50.70 seconds, Junior Justin Schievelbein scored second in the 400-meter dash. Mike Cipollone started his freshman season off with a three-way tie for second place in the triple jump at a distance of 1.82 meters.

In team events, freshman Kyle Bardon, sophomore Brain Rautio, sophomore Anthony Giacomoni, and sophomore Bobby Bloor—the men’s 4x400 relay team—clocked 3:28.80 to gain the win. The 4x800 relay team of sophomore Max Molleo, freshman T.J. Parker, freshman Mike Young, and freshman Mike Zampi came in second with a time of 8:25.41.

For the women, senior Jen Dais came out victorious in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.34. In 2006, Dias was named the Liberty League Outdoor Track Performer of the Year for the third consecutive time. She was also chosen this week’s Track Performer of the Week by the Liberty League. Sophomore Cathy Malloy clocked 38:00.60 to place first in the 10,000-meter run.

With a distance of 40.84 meters, senior Laurel White attained second in the women’s hammer throw. White was named the Liberty League Field Performer of the Week. Her classmate Carol Scalice also achieved a second place finish with a 5.25 meter long jump.

Sophomore Nikki Kosina, freshman Lauren Brown, sophomore Molly Kluge, and freshman Lauren Viet comprise the women’s 4x800 relay team. Over the weekend they gained a first place victory with a time of 11:04.96.

This Saturday at 11 am, the competition will be at Harkness Field for the Red Hawk first home meet.
