Independent Council

Last Tuesday, the Independent Council officially endorsed Erik Swanson ’08 for the position of President of the Union and Julia Leusner ’08 for the position of Grand Marshal. We feel that both make extremely strong candidates and have the experience, motivation, and vision to help make next year a highly effective one for students.

Swanson has spent multiple years on the Executive Board and has served as the vice chairman during this school year. His plans include both exciting student activities as well as a club accountability program to enhance the communication between the Executive Board and the Union’s clubs. By fostering enhanced communication, the E-Board should be able to more aptly provide services and assistance for those clubs in need, while also providing a more nurturing environment for new student organizations. The Independent Council expects to see both growth and efficiency in the Union with Swanson’s help.

Leusner has served on RPI’s Student Senate since her freshman year, acting as the vice chairman during her sophomore year. By leading the Academic Affairs Committee over the past two years, she has established connections with both faculty and administration, helping her to accomplish her goals such as mid-term assessments. In her Contract with RPI, Julia outlines a comprehensive list of not only goals, but potential methods for achieving these goals. Important examples include a three-step plan to easing the problem of parking on campus, providing English-speaking TAs to undergraduate courses, and conducting a thorough investigation of our school’s rising tuition costs.

The Independent Council is confident in its assertion that both of these candidates will continue to make fine leaders for not only independent students, but for the student body as a whole.
