All over Troy, businesses and offices were closed Monday and Tuesday due to the large snowstorm that hit the area this weekend.
RPI was no exception, as classes were cancelled both days. It is the first time since 1993 that the school has cancelled classes for an entire day.
"I think it’s great that we got two days off, but sooner or later the work’s going to catch up with you," said Mike Opalka ‘01.
Ekin Binal ‘01 didn’t appreciate the storm as much when he was trying to get his car out on Tuesday. "Right this second, no, but I guess yesterday when I was laying in bed it was alright."
Opalka said he didn’t bother to dig out his car. "I just walk … A couple of my friends said it took them 20 minutes to get out of a snow ditch. It’s not even worth it."
The snow affected everything from classes to administrative offices to Union services. HSBC closed early Monday and remained closed all day Tuesday. The Games Room in the Union was open for limited hours both days. Most other services were closed for both days.
Throughout Troy, it was much of the same story. Travel on most roadways was treacherous, as high winds blowing snow made visibility low and keeping the streets clean impossible. Over 90 percent of flights out of Albany International Airport were cancelled.
Government offices and businesses remained closed Monday, and only a few ventured to open Tuesday afternoon, when progress had been made in cleaning up the streets.
CDTA continued running bus route 86 around campus, but the RPI stops along routes 70 and 90 were taken out of those loops.
The storm, considered one of the biggest in the last 50 years, dropped more than 20 inches of snow onto the area by Tuesday afternoon. Snow emergencies were declared in many area communities, though no emergency measures were put into effect for Troy.
