Safety dubious

To the Editor:

I commute to school everyday from approximately 15 miles away. I do not have a problem with coming to school the day after a major snowstorm; I leave a little earlier and take my time. I have confidence that if school is not canceled, then the road conditions are manageable. However, this was not the case Thursday.

The road conditions around campus were horrible Thursday. There was no way of safely driving up College Ave., Federal St., and Sage Ave. Did someone forget that RPI is located on a steep hill? I am not upset that school was not closed. I am infuriated that access to campus was limited and very unsafe. These factors must be taken into consideration before people are given the OK to arrive on campus. If these roads are not safe due to the City of Troy, or RPI, not being able to clear them, then staff and students should not risk their safety attempting to find a parking spot or enter a garage.

My vehicle, which is safe and has snow tires, could not make it up College Ave; my car began to slide backwards. Luckily, I was able to get back onto Sixth Street. At that point, I could barely get going since I was on an incline and had no momentum.

I don’t understand how the administration can ask people to travel to campus when the immediate area around campus is unsafe and driving is unmanageable.
