Senate approves new GM Week Handbook

At its last meeting, the Student Senate approved the 2007 GM Week Elections Handbook. The main point of interest in the handbook concerned the number of nominations that a candidate for Grand Marshal or President of the Union would be required to obtain. After a lengthy discussion at last week’s meeting, the Rules and Elections Committee had lowered the required number from 750 to 675 nominations; during the Senate meeting however, the number was again lowered from 675 to 500. This 500 is the number of nominations required before a change made in last year’s handbook at the request of former GM Max Yates ’06.

The Senate also discussed the new Shuttle Tracking System that is currently up and running. The main problem that students are finding with the system is that it is a bit difficult to find out where the buildings are and that it would be helpful to have either a reference point or a rollover to tell what buildings are being shown on campus.

The debate over allowing Troy Student Housing to advertise on campus also took place at this meeting. The flyers advertising for Troy Student Housing are in the process of being removed from campus by Union staff, and the Senate discussed whether to allow Troy Student Housing to advertise on campus until they have had a chance to discuss the matter with a representative from the organization. The outcome leaned toward not letting Troy Student Housing to advertise until that meeting, though no official decisions have been made.
