Top Hat RPI, alumni support each other
Posted 01-24-2007 at 3:36PM
Wow, it’s the spring semester of your senior year here at RPI. What comes next? Hopefully a job, family, happiness, and money will all find you eventually. But what will become of your relationship with RPI? Hopefully you’ll be back every year—or as often as possible—for Freakout! or at least be able to attend your class reunions, but that’s not the most of it. There are still ways to stay involved even if you can’t get back to Troy every once in a while. Across the nation, there are “Alumni Chapters” that host Rensselaer events. Whether you’re attending an actual RPI sporting event (these are common in the Northeast, but I attended one in Denver, Colo., this year) or just going on a pub crawl with fellow ’Tute graduates, these events are an excellent way to stay involved with the school that prepared you to be successful in the real world. Even if there isn’t a chapter in your area, you can start a new chapter, or become involved in other alumni programs. Check out http://www.alumni.rpi.edu/ for events that you can attend and ways that you can stay involved.
As an undergrad, I harbored a lot of assumptions about my status later in life as an alumnus of RPI. I assumed that all I would do is donate money when I could, and tell potential students about my experiences at RPI. What I’ve found out since becoming a student member of the Rensselaer Alumni Association Board of Trustees, is that what I’ve assumed was only a small piece of the whole puzzle. As an alum, you get to participate in stuff like the Worldwide Travel program, the E-mail For Life program, and Let’s Go Red booster program to name a few. Donations also help, but the point was that there are so many ways to be involved with RPI after you’re gone.
In the meantime, while you’re still here as a student, make sure that you’re taking advantage of everything this school has to offer. Make sure that you’re attending the events that you and the alumni pay for. Certainly don’t just sit in your room and work all the time! Make sure that you’re maintaining your grades, and then get out there and have some fun with your friends. | |
