This past Friday, The Polytechnic conducted its annual Pizza Poll, held each fall semester to keep students informed of which pizza place is currently the best in the area. This year, we chose 12 restaurants that deliver to RPI and the greater campus area. Though this is not an exact science, we try to call a different place every 10-15 minutes to stagger the delivery times. We ordered one large cheese pizza from each establishment, and the kitchen crew was in charge of recording when the call was placed versus when the pizza arrived, how much it cost, and the size of the pie.

Once the pizza—or in some cases multiple pizzas at the same time—arrived, those not participating helped record the information and cut the slices in half to ensure everyone got a piece with some crust. In the other room, the hungry testers waited impatiently and watched movies until they were fed. They were asked to judge each slice on the following criteria: cheese, sauce, crust, appearance, temperature, and overall taste. In order to judge appearance, they were shown the whole pizza before we cut it to pieces. Fortunately, this year we had a pizza cutter unlike years past when we used the biggest, sharpest knife in the kitchen.

All in all, this year’s event was a success, despite the slow start as the first few places we called had disconnected numbers with no forwarding information. As usual, a few pizzas showed up at the same time; it is always amusing when the delivery drivers realize it is Pizza Poll night. Congratulations are in order for De Fazio’s Wood-Fired Pizza, the winner of this year’s poll. Hoosick Pizza finished just behind, but managed to claim the top spot on sauce and temperature ratings. Also, the award for most random name change goes to Big Apple Pizza, formerly known as Pizza Bella, which managed to change the name and sign overnight.
