The women needed to win both of their games last weekend, but instead let go of a 3-1 lead on Sunday after squeaking out a 3-2 win Saturday—and watched Robert Morris University rally and score four unanswered goals to win the game 5-3.
The team, playing strong Sunday, got on the board first with a goal by junior Brooke Thompson, assisted by freshmen Whitney Naslund and Allysen Weidner.
After scoring two goals in less than a minute putting them up 3-1, the momentum evaporated. The team instead backed off and pretended as if the Colonials were just going to turn over and play dead for the next 35 minutes of regulation play. The first of the two was a power play goal at 5:43 by sophomore Melissa Boik, assisted by Laura Gersten, and it was followed by second-year captain Sarah Daniel’s goal at 6:32 into the second period, assisted by Rossli Chace.
“Rossli made a really great play down the corner fighting for the puck,” said Daniel. “She came out with it and I just went to the net because I was thinking she might be able to get it to me there and she got it right across the crease to me and I just tapped it in. Easy for me, mostly Rossli’s work.”
Robert Morris did not give up the game, but continued to skate with the Engineers. Despite being outshot 32-21 and only converting a single power play—they showed up to play and that they did. “We came out really strong, the tempo was good in the first period,” Daniel said; “By the end of the second period we had slowed down a little bit, might have started to take them a bit lightly. I give them a lot of credit, they found our weaknesses and managed to capitalize on them.”
It took Robert Morris just 37 seconds to start their comeback when Kristen Miles broke up RPI’s celebrations. “We let them get back into the game when we should have just taken the momentum and gone with it,” said a disappointed Daniel.
From there, the Colonials didn’t rest and used the third period to break away from the Engineers. As they were called for too many players on the ice, the desperate team pulled the goalie with a minute and a half left to give themselves a fighting chance to tie the game at four. The play was unsuccessful and Robert Morris found a loose puck and lobbed it at the open net with 32 seconds left in the game. That sealed the deal and left the score at 5-3.
“I think the first game we skated really well,” said Gersten, “We just saw each other a lot and were making good passes and obviously that showed with the win. Today we were still finding each other, we just couldn’t put it all together and I think we’ll bounce back really well next weekend when we go to Princeton and Quinnipiac.”
After starting off with a scoreless first period, the Colonials scored first mid-way through the second. Gersten connected with sophomore Emily Donowick at 16:11 into the period to tie it up. Brooke Thompson scored her first goal of the weekend unassisted just a minute later on a power play. RPI converted two of the eight power plays on Saturday and two of five opportunities on Sunday. RPI out-shot the Colonials 50-16 during the game yet only converted one more of their shots on net than Robert Morris did of their 16 shots. Naslund would get the eventual game-winner on a 5-3 power play goal 7:39 into the third assisted by Gersten and Weidner.
RMU also found energy in the third period of Saturday’s game and looked like they were going to tie up the game, but the time ran out for them as the game ended 3-2 in RPI’s favor.
Gersten’s line had a good showing despite the disappointing weekend, “We see each other on the ice, and if we keep doing that we’ll be fine.” “We always seem to find each other, we work pretty well together” added Boik. Burke expressed frustration after Sunday’s loss, saying, “It’s very disappointing to make one step forward and then take two steps back.”
The Engineers hope to rebound against league rivals Quinnipiac at 7 pm on Friday and Princeton at 4 pm Saturday. “We’ve got to come out firing,” said Gersten, “Get two wins if possible there, we’ve just got to play hard and play like we know how to play.” The team will be working this weekend off in this weeks’ practices, “probably more conditioning so we can be ready for their faster teams,” says Boik.
