Saying that the Engineers overpowered the Bears would be a massive understatement but how else can you describe a victory in which RPI was on track for a 140 point game when they put in their second, third, and fourth stringers?

To be fair, the young and inexperienced team from Becker College is only in its second year of existence and was scheduled merely because it added a home game to the schedule.

A win’s a win and the Engineers improved their record to 3-1 and got some great looks at younger players. “There’s some good young players and it was good to get them in there and play; I think they played pretty well,” said Head Coach Joe King after the game in which RPI finished 56-6.

Some of those younger players include sophomore running back Isaac Williams who scored just before halftime and has shown much potential, and freshman Jason Sgarlata who had 104 yards with two touchdowns and was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week. The team recruited a couple good running backs and hopes to see them prove their worth in years to come as they did against Becker last Saturday.

All four quarterbacks saw time in the game, with former starter senior Frank Catellier leading the solid string of backups. Freshman recruit Will Gottschalk is, according to King, an excellent quarterback that they predict will someday start for the Engineers. Sophomore starter Jimmy Robertson’s classmate Kevin Avery also put up a good showing.

The defense held Becker to -11 yards rushing in an effort that broke the school’s 1967 record set in a game against Haverford. The record-setting game, however, wasn’t enough to convince King that the defense has their issues worked out, but it did get some of the players excited to go out and prove next week that they’re ready to compete. “It’s nice to shut them down, but at the same time we know what we were going up against,” agreed senior captain Armin Warner of the dominating play by the defense.

“I think we did some decent things,” said a tentative King who qualified it with, “We’re a work in progress.”

“This’ll pick right up again tomorrow morning—we’re working seven days a week,” he said of the team’s all out effort to become a NCAA bid-worthy team. King was also pleased with Saturday’s game plan, “I thought the coaching staff did a solid job,” he said.

After last week’s fall to rival Hobart, Senior Adam LoGiudice felt, “Everyone’s got a sour taste in their mouths so we’re just trying to come hard, every game—come out harder because we know its going to take a lot to get into the playoffs, especially because we’ve got to fight back against Union and Hobart if we meet them again.” He’s looking forward to next week and taking control of the special teams again.

“Hopefully we can get it together because we’ve got a tough one next week. St. Lawrence up there is a tough one,” said King of the big league game this weekend. RPI heads to Liberty League rival for a 1 pm game on Saturday.
