Many Dave Matthews Band fans may be very surprised when they first hear their newest studio album, Everyday. The new album is coming out after their first attempt at recording an album last year—before the start of their summer tour—turned out to be unsuccessful. While on tour, they tested the songs before they were released and decided to scrap all of the songs, along with their producer, Steve Lillywhite.

The band then teamed up with producer Glen Ballard (Aerosmith, No Doubt, Alanis Morissette), who also helped write some of the new songs. All of the songs for the new album were written in only nine days, immediately following the completion of their Summer 2000 tour on September 20. The band started recording on October 9 and finished on November 23.

Soon after the recording of the album was final, they went on a two-week winter tour in December, making stops in the Northeast including Albany, Boston, and New York. During that tour, they didn’t play any of the songs they had just recorded, but did continue to play the Lillywhite songs that were scrapped such as "Grey Street," "Grace is Gone," and "Bartender."

Their new album includes 12 brand new songs. One of them, "I Did It," has gotten heavy play on the radio, MTV, and VH1 since they released it as the album’s first single in early January. Fans can also download "I Did It" for free from the Dave Matthews Band’s official webpage. Other songs include "When the World Ends," "The Space Between," "Dreams of Our Fathers," "So Right," "If I Had It All," "What You Are," "Angel," "Fool to Think," "Sleep to Dream Her," "Mother Father," and "Everyday."

One reason Everyday may surprise some Dave Matthews Band fans is that it is their first album to clock in under an hour. Also, the solos by band members such as violinist Boyd Tinsley and saxophonist LeRoi Moore that could be found on previous albums such as Before These Crowded Streets and Crash are not present on this album. Lead singer Dave Matthews plays the electric guitar for the first time ever on this album, which is one thing that gives some of the music a totally different sound than previously recorded songs. Another surprise on the new album is longtime musician Santana, who guests on the song "Mother Father."

The Dave Matthews Band has also just announced their new tour dates for their spring/summer 2001 tour. The tour kicks off in their hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia on April 21, makes its way south through Texas and west through California, before coming back to the area with a concert at Giants Stadium on June 11, Boston on June 16, and Buffalo on June 20. The band has also announced that Macy Gray will open for all of their stadium shows this summer. More dates for their tour will be released in mid-March with tickets for the first round of shows going on sale through Ticketmaster on March 10. If you are a member of their official fan club, The Warehouse, you have the opportunity to order tickets through the lottery that is running now through February 27 for the first series of shows.

Also, make sure you watch out for Dave Matthews Band on TV as they will be on Saturday Night Live this Saturday, on The Late Show with David Letterman next Monday, and on MTV’s Total Request Live next Tuesday.
